COSCO's own brand navigation equipment proved itself in Arctic

2013-09-10

COSCO Group's "Yongsheng Wheel" berthed at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands at 21:00 on September 10, and successfully completed the first flight of the Arctic Northeast Passage. This is the first Chinese merchant ship to successfully reach Europe via the Arctic Northeast Passage. In order to ensure the smooth success of the maiden voyage mission, the COSCO Group's Safety Supervision Department and the COSCO Department of COSCO Shipping Co., Ltd. worked closely together to make a lot of preparatory work on ship communication, navigation and ship monitoring, including the guidance of the A4 sea area. Equipment addition, crew training and independent communication product development. Among them, the "SEAPARD" series products (mainly ECDIS and GPS compass) independently developed by COSCO Group have played an important role in safeguarding the Arctic expedition.

(1) Adding comet equipment to ensure smooth communication of ships
Due to the limited coverage of maritime satellites, maritime satellite systems (including Inmarsat–F stations, Inmarsat–C stations) on ships may not be able to operate due to the inability to locate satellites at high latitudes. In order to ensure that the ship can sail in the Arctic channel in real time, the Yongsheng wheel is equipped with a comet system. The comet system is a low-orbit satellite system with 66 stars in the air for global coverage. During the voyage, the Iridium system has maintained normal communication work at high latitudes.
(2) Use self-developed navigation products to ensure the normal navigation of the ship
When the ship is sailing at high latitudes, the magnetic compass and the gyrocompass may have a heading deviation or even no use at all. For this reason, COSCO Group has independently developed the "GPS compass" equipment, which is a fusion GPS dual antenna azimuth solving technology and fiber optic gyro technology. Developed high-precision integrated navigation products. At low latitudes, GPS and fiber optic gyros work together to solve the azimuth. Its accuracy is far superior to the accuracy of the gyrocompass (the specific accuracy is related to the accuracy of the fiber optic gyroscope). At high latitudes, the accuracy of the fiber optic gyroscope will also be reduced. At this time, the operation mode of the GPS compass device is changed to rely solely on the GPS to solve the azimuth, and the accuracy can still meet the navigation requirements.
In this Arctic voyage, the Yongsheng wheel installed the "SEAPARD" GPS compass device, which played a very good role in high-latitude navigation. In addition, in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, all ships will be installed with an electronic chart system by 2018. According to the performance requirements, COSCO Group independently developed the “SEAPARD” electronic chart system, which was installed on the Yongsheng wheel and has been working normally. It completed the first voyage with Yongsheng Wheel and escorted the ship's navigation.
(3) Apply online real-time monitoring system of ships to keep abreast of ship dynamics
In order to do a good job in ship emergency management, COSCO Group has been committed to developing an online real-time monitoring system for ships. The system combines AIS terrestrial base station data, AIS satellite data and C station POLLING data to realize real-time tracking of ships at sea and to understand ships. The location of the navigation provides strong data support for emergency management. COSCO Group's online real-time monitoring system for ships played an important role in the first northeast navigation channel of the Yongsheng Wheel. Throughout the voyage, the system can track all the trajectories of the ship and keep abreast of the ship's navigational dynamics.

Yongsheng Wheel is the first Chinese merchant ship to successfully reach Europe via the northeastern Arctic Passage. The “SEAPARD” GPS compass and electronic chart system (ECDIS) used on it are COSCO's self-developed products, which play an important role in navigation. The role of assisting Yongsheng to successfully complete the first voyage. Their successful use has laid a good foundation for COSCO Group to use more independent brands in the future, and it has also taken a solid step for COSCO Group to use advanced technology products to develop independent technology products.
